4 Days Bhutan Tour - Thimphu, Paro & Tiger's Nest

This 4-day Bhutan tour is the shortest way to see the heart of the kingdom: two days in Thimphu, the only capital city in the world without a traffic light, and a day in Paro that ends with the climb to Tiger's Nest Monastery. You fly into Paro, travel by private vehicle with a licensed Bhutanese guide, and leave having stood in front of the country's most famous sight — all within a long weekend.

Trip Highlights

  • Hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), clinging to a cliff face some 900m above the Paro valley — the image that defines Bhutan.
  • Stand beneath the Buddha Dordenma, a 51.5-metre gilded bronze Buddha seated above Thimphu with 125,000 smaller Buddhas held inside it.
  • Explore Thimphu, the world's only capital with no traffic lights, where a white-gloved policeman still directs the main junction by hand.
  • Witness the thirteen traditional crafts being taught at the Zorig Chusum painting school, and Bhutanese village life recreated at the Simply Bhutan living museum.
  • Meet the takin — Bhutan's improbable national animal, part goat, part antelope — at the Motithang Takin Preserve.
  • Walk the easy Kuensel Phodrang and Wangditse forest trails, strung with prayer flags and open to the whole Thimphu valley.
  • Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, believed to have been founded in the 7th century and one of the oldest temples in the country.

Trip Overview

A 4-day Bhutan tour doesn't sound like enough time for a country this deliberate about slowing visitors down — and yet this is the itinerary that keeps working. It takes the two places most travellers come to Bhutan for, Thimphu and Paro, and gives each one a full day instead of a rushed morning, with the hike to Tiger's Nest as the payoff on day three.

You land at Paro International Airport, where the approach between the hills is famously one of the more memorable landings in the Himalayas, and drive straight up to Thimphu at 2,334m. The capital fills the first two days: the Memorial Chorten circled by pensioners turning prayer wheels, the 51.5-metre Buddha Dordenma looking out over the whole valley, an easy forest walk on the Wangditse trail, and the painting school where teenagers learn the thirteen traditional Bhutanese crafts exactly as their grandparents did.

Day three is the one you'll remember. After an early breakfast you drive back down to Paro and start the climb to Taktsang — Tiger's Nest — the monastery pinned to a sheer cliff roughly 900m above the valley floor, where, according to legend, Guru Rinpoche arrived on the back of a flying tigress in the 8th century. The round trip takes five to six hours at an unhurried pace, and you can hire a pony for the uphill stretch as far as the cafeteria. Reaching the prayer flags at the top is a genuinely earned moment, and there's a traditional hot-stone bath waiting in Paro afterwards.

No trekking experience is needed — Tiger's Nest is a steady uphill walk on a well-made path, not a climb. Your permits, Sustainable Development Fee and visa are all arranged before you arrive, and an HSJ-appointed licensed Bhutanese guide is with you from the airport pick-up to the final drop-off.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Approx. 1 hr drive · Admission Ticket Included

Your flight into Paro drops between forested ridges onto one of the most talked-about airstrips in the Himalayas, and our representative meets you the moment you clear customs. From there it's a scenic hour or so up the valley to Thimphu (2,334m), Bhutan's capital and, at a few hundred thousand people, a capital that still feels like a market town.

You'll begin at the Memorial Chorten, the white stupa built in 1974 for the third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, where elderly Thimphu residents walk slow clockwise laps and turn the prayer wheels well into the evening. Then a gentle walk from Kuensel Phodrang across to Changangkha Lhakhang, with the valley opening up beneath you, before some free time in Thimphu town to find dinner and adjust to the altitude.

Day 2

Full day · Admission Ticket Included

A full day in the capital, starting high above it. The Buddha Dordenma sits on a ridge south of the city — 51.5 metres of gilded bronze with 125,000 smaller Buddha statues housed inside the throne it rests on — and the terrace around it is the best single view of Thimphu you'll get.

From there the day is deliberately varied: the Wangditse trail, an easy pine-forest path lined with prayer flags; the Motithang Takin Preserve, home to the national animal and an animal so odd that legend credits a 15th-century saint with assembling it from a goat and a cow; Simply Bhutan, a living museum where staff walk you through village houses, dress, archery and butter tea; and the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, the painting school where students spend years learning the thirteen traditional Bhutanese arts. You'll finish at the viewpoint over Tashichho Dzong, the fortress-monastery that houses the throne room and the government, floodlit after dark.

Day 3

5–6 hrs hike + 1.5 hrs drive · Admission Ticket Included

An early breakfast, then the drive back down to Paro and on to the base of Taktsang Monastery — about an hour and a half. This is the day the whole trip is built around.

Tiger's Nest is a steady uphill walk rather than a technical climb, but it earns its reputation: five to six hours round trip at a comfortable pace, through pine forest hung with prayer flags, past a cafeteria at the halfway point, then a staircase down and back up across a waterfall to the monastery buildings themselves. Ponies can be hired for the uphill section as far as the cafeteria. Standing at the top, looking back down 900m of cliff at the valley you drove through that morning, is the moment people come to Bhutan for.

Afterwards you'll visit Kyichu Lhakhang, believed to have been founded in the 7th century and among the oldest temples in Bhutan, then head into Paro for a traditional hot-stone bath if you'd like one, and time to browse the handicraft and souvenir shops along the main street.

Please note: shoes, bags and cameras must be left outside before entering the monastery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and we arrange it for you. The USD 40 visa fee is included in this tour. We need a scan of your passport — valid for at least six months — and a passport-size photograph, which our operator submits before you travel.

It is Bhutan's tourism levy, USD 100 per person per night, and it is included in this tour's price. Bhutan puts the fee towards free healthcare and education, conservation and carbon offsetting — it is how the country keeps tourism low-volume by design.

Moderate — a steady uphill walk of five to six hours round trip, with no technical climbing. The path is well made and there is a cafeteria roughly halfway. Ponies can be hired for the uphill section as far as the cafeteria if you would rather not walk it. Reasonable general fitness is enough; no trekking experience is required.

No. Flights to and from Paro are not included, and are quoted separately. Paro is served from Kathmandu, Delhi, Bangkok, Singapore and Dhaka among others, and we are happy to book your flights alongside the tour.

March to May and September to November are the best windows. Spring brings rhododendron in bloom, and autumn brings the clearest mountain views and most of Bhutan's major tshechu festivals. Winter is cold but bright and quiet; the monsoon runs June to August.

Yes. Paro is a short flight from Kathmandu, and many travellers combine the two. Tell us your dates and we will add the Kathmandu–Paro flights and any nights you would like in Nepal either side.
