Trip Overview

Overview

The Everest Scenic Flight is the easiest and most spectacular way to see Mount Everest — the highest mountain on Earth. In just one hour, you fly from Kathmandu directly toward the Himalayas, getting within 32 km of the Everest summit (8,849 m). No trekking, no acclimatisation and no physical fitness required. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that anyone can enjoy.

Operated by certified Nepali airlines including Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines and Shree Airlines, the flight uses small propeller aircraft (15–18 seats) that are specially configured so every passenger gets an unobstructed window view. Before you take off, the crew briefs you on each peak you will see. Once in the air, the pilot guides the plane in a gentle arc along the Himalayan range — giving everyone on both sides of the aircraft a clear, close-up view of the mountains.

In addition to Everest, you will see a spectacular parade of the world's highest peaks — Lhotse (8,516 m), Makalu (8,485 m), Cho Oyu (8,188 m), Kangchenjunga (8,586 m), Ama Dablam (6,812 m), Gauri Shankar, Nuptse, Dorje Lakpa and many more. Below you, the vast glaciers of the Khumbu Valley, high-altitude lakes and the green hills of Sagarmatha National Park stretch out in every direction.

The entire experience — hotel pickup, airport check-in, the flight and return transfer — takes about 3 hours in total. You are back at your hotel in time for a full breakfast. A personalised Everest Flight Certificate is presented to every passenger after landing. This flight is suitable for all ages, including children, seniors and travellers with mobility needs (wheelchair facilities available on request).

This Everest scenic flight is arranged by Himalayan Social Journey (HSJ), with guaranteed window seats, hotel transfers and full support included in the price.

Stop 1
Flight From Kathmandu to Mountain

5:00 AM — Wake-Up
Our representative will contact your hotel with a morning wake-up call. Check the weather before you leave — flights operate in clear conditions only. Pack your camera or smartphone (fully charged), your passport or ID, and a warm layer for the early morning airport chill.

5:30 AM — Hotel Pickup
Our driver picks you up from your hotel and transfers you to the domestic terminal at Tribhuvan International Airport. Allow for early morning Kathmandu traffic.

6:15 AM — Airport Check-In
Arrive at the domestic terminal and check in at your airline's counter. Collect your boarding pass and clear security. The waiting area is a good spot for tea or coffee before boarding.

6:45 AM — Boarding
Board the aircraft — a small propeller plane with 15–18 seats, every seat a window seat. The crew will brief you on the flight route and the peaks you will see before take-off.

7:00 AM — Take-Off
The plane lifts off from Kathmandu (1,400 m) and climbs toward the Himalayan range. Within minutes, the city gives way to green hills, and the white peaks begin to appear on the horizon. The pilot provides live commentary naming each mountain as it comes into view.

7:20 AM — Closest Point to Mount Everest
The aircraft reaches within 32 km of the summit — the highlight of the flight. The pilot gently turns the plane so passengers on both sides get clear views. Everest (8,849 m), Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Ama Dablam and Kangchenjunga fill the windows. The morning light at this hour is perfect for photography — golden, sharp and glare-free. Tip: hold your camera slightly away from the window glass to reduce reflections.

7:50 AM — Return to Kathmandu
The plane turns back toward Kathmandu. Enjoy the last views of the Himalayas as the aircraft descends back toward the valley.

8:00 AM — Landing and Certificate
After landing, every passenger receives a personalised Everest Flight Certificate — a commemorating keepsake of your flight to the top of the world.

8:15 AM — Transfer Back to Hotel
Our driver returns you to your hotel in time for a full breakfast and a free day in Kathmandu.

Frequently Asked Questions

The flight usually takes off very early in the morning (around 6:00 AM) to maximize the chances of clear skies. However, mountain flights are heavily dependent on weather conditions for visibility. If the flight is canceled due to bad weather, you will typically be offered the option to reschedule for the next available day or receive a full refund.

The flight itself lasts approximately 50 to 60 minutes. However, the total duration of the tour, from hotel pick-up to drop-off back at your hotel in Kathmandu, is typically around 2.5 to 3 hours. This time accounts for the early morning hotel transfer, check-in, the flight itself, and the return transfer.

Early booking is highly recommended. To secure your guaranteed window seat and preferred early morning departure, especially if you are traveling during the peak seasons (March–May and September–November), it is advised to reserve your spot at least 1–2 weeks in advance. However, we often accept last-minute bookings; please contact us directly to check real-time availability for immediate travel.

Yes, the Everest Mountain Flight is highly safe and managed by certified airlines and highly experienced pilots who are specially trained for high-altitude and mountain weather conditions. Airlines adhere to strict aviation rules, and aircraft undergo regular maintenance to ensure passenger safety. A detailed safety briefing is provided before takeoff. Flights are scheduled early in the morning when visibility is optimal and risks associated with unpredictable weather are reduced.

Yes, a guaranteed window seat is provided for every passenger, ensuring you have unobstructed, panoramic views of the entire Himalayan range. The aircraft flies approximately 20 miles (approx. 32 km) from the summit of Mount Everest (Sagarmatha). This proximity ensures the most intimate and breathtaking close-up aerial view possible.

Yes, travelers with mobility issues are welcome on this tour. The Everest Scenic Flight is designed to be inclusive and is fit for physically disabled people. Our included complimentary transfers will assist you to and from the airport, and the tour airlines will provide necessary arrangements, including wheelchair facilities, to ensure a smooth boarding and overall comfortable experience. We recommend informing us of any specific requirements at the time of booking.

Yes, the Everest Scenic Flight is perfectly suitable for all age groups, including children, families, and older travelers/seniors. It is an ideal choice because it provides spectacular, close-up views of the Himalayas without any physical exertion or safety concerns related to high altitude or strenuous trekking, making the experience comfortable, safe, and memorable for everyone

The flight operates year-round, but the clearest views are in spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) when skies are sharp and visibility is excellent. Monsoon (June–August) brings clouds that often block the peaks, making cancellations more common. Winter (December–February) can also offer excellent views — cold but very sharp air.

The flight is operated by certified Nepali airlines — typically Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines or Shree Airlines, all licensed by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal. All use specially configured aircraft where every seat is a window seat. HSJ will confirm your airline at the time of booking.

Bring a valid passport or ID, a fully charged camera or smartphone, and a warm layer for the early morning. Only small personal items are allowed in the cabin. Photography tip: hold your camera slightly away from the window glass rather than pressing it against it — this reduces reflections and gives sharper images. The morning light between 7:00–8:00 AM is ideal for mountain photography.

Many passengers on this flight are first-time small aircraft flyers. The planes are stable, well-maintained and operated by highly experienced pilots. Turbulence is minimal on early morning flights when the air is still and calm. The crew are attentive and will look after you throughout. If you are nervous, let your HSJ representative know and they will provide extra reassurance before boarding.
