6 Days Bhutan Tour - Thimphu, Punakha & Tiger's Nest

This 6-day Bhutan tour adds the country's most beautiful valley to the essentials. You get two days in Thimphu, a crossing of the Dochula Pass to Punakha and its riverside dzong, a day of Paro's fortresses and temples, and the hike to Tiger's Nest β€” travelling by private vehicle with a licensed Bhutanese guide throughout.

Trip Highlights

  • Hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), clinging to a cliff face some 900m above the Paro valley β€” the image that defines Bhutan.
  • Cross the Dochula Pass at 3,100m, where 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens stand against the eastern Himalaya on a clear morning.
  • Stand at Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 at the meeting of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers and still the winter seat of Bhutan's central monastic body.
  • Walk out to Chimi Lhakhang, the 15th-century fertility temple of the Divine Madman, on a short hike through rice fields and a village painted with phalluses.
  • Cross the Punakha suspension bridge, one of the longest in the country, strung high over the Pho Chhu.
  • Stand beneath the Buddha Dordenma, a 51.5-metre gilded bronze Buddha seated above Thimphu with 125,000 smaller Buddhas held inside it.
  • Explore Paro's fortresses and temples β€” Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum in its round watchtower, and Kyichu Lhakhang, believed to date to the 7th century.
  • Soak in a traditional Bhutanese hot-stone bath in Paro after the Tiger's Nest climb.

Trip Overview

The 6-day Bhutan tour is the one we recommend most often. Four days is enough to see Thimphu and Paro; six is enough to cross the mountains into Punakha, and that drive β€” over the Dochula Pass at 3,100m, past 108 chortens lined up on a bend in the road β€” is the moment Bhutan stops being a city trip and becomes a Himalayan one.

You start in Thimphu at 2,334m, where two full days cover the Memorial Chorten, the 51.5-metre Buddha Dordenma above the valley, the takin preserve, the Zorig Chusum painting school and easy forest walks on the Wangditse and Kuensel Phodrang trails. Then you climb to Dochula and drop into the Punakha valley, which sits low and warm at around 1,240m β€” rice terraces, banana trees, and Punakha Dzong standing white and enormous where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers meet. It is widely held to be the most beautiful building in Bhutan, and it's hard to argue once you're standing in front of it.

Day four brings you back over the pass to Paro, stopping at the old iron-chain bridge at Tamchog Lhakhang, the National Museum in its round watchtower, and Rinpung Dzong above the river. Day five is Tiger's Nest β€” five to six hours round trip up to the monastery pinned to a cliff some 900m above the valley, where according to legend Guru Rinpoche arrived on the back of a flying tigress in the 8th century. A traditional hot-stone bath in Paro afterwards is the local remedy, and it works.

No trekking experience is needed β€” Tiger's Nest is a steady uphill walk on a good path, and ponies can be hired for the climb as far as the cafeteria. Permits, the Sustainable Development Fee and your visa are arranged before you arrive, and a licensed Bhutanese guide is with you from the airport pick-up to the final drop-off.

Your flight into Paro drops between forested ridges onto one of the most talked-about airstrips in the Himalayas, and our representative meets you the moment you clear customs. From there it's a scenic hour or so up the valley to Thimphu (2,334m), Bhutan's capital and, at a few hundred thousand people, a capital that still feels like a market town.

You'll begin at the Memorial Chorten, the white stupa built in 1974 for the third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, where elderly Thimphu residents walk slow clockwise laps and turn the prayer wheels well into the evening. Then a gentle walk from Kuensel Phodrang across to Changangkha Lhakhang, with the valley opening up beneath you, before some free time in Thimphu town to find dinner and adjust to the altitude.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and we arrange it for you. The USD 40 visa fee is included in this tour. We need a scan of your passport β€” valid for at least six months β€” and a passport-size photograph, which our operator submits before you travel.

It is Bhutan's tourism levy, USD 100 per person per night, and it is included in this tour's price. Bhutan puts the fee towards free healthcare and education, conservation and carbon offsetting β€” it is how the country keeps tourism low-volume by design.

Moderate β€” a steady uphill walk of five to six hours round trip, with no technical climbing. The path is well made and there is a cafeteria roughly halfway. Ponies can be hired for the uphill section as far as the cafeteria if you would rather not walk it. Reasonable general fitness is enough; no trekking experience is required.

Choose 6 days if you want Punakha. The 4-day tour covers Thimphu, Paro and Tiger's Nest; the 6-day adds the drive over the Dochula Pass at 3,100m and a night in the Punakha valley, home to Punakha Dzong and Chimi Lhakhang. It is the single best addition to a short Bhutan trip.

No. Flights to and from Paro are not included, and are quoted separately. Paro is served from Kathmandu, Delhi, Bangkok, Singapore and Dhaka among others, and we are happy to book your flights alongside the tour.

March to May and September to November are the best windows. Spring brings rhododendron and jacaranda in bloom at Punakha, and autumn brings the clearest views from Dochula Pass along with most of Bhutan's major tshechu festivals. Winter is cold but bright and quiet; the monsoon runs June to August.

Yes. Paro is a short flight from Kathmandu, and many travellers combine the two. Tell us your dates and we will add the Kathmandu–Paro flights and any nights you would like in Nepal either side.
