Trip Overview

This trek links two of the world's highest mountains on foot. It is the eastern part of the Great Himalaya Trail. You start in the Tamor valley, reach Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, then turn west across two high passes to the Makalu Barun area.

Remote and demanding

Most nights are in camp. Some nights are in simple lodges in villages like Ghunsa and Olangchung Gola. There are days with no village at all. The passes are high and the trail is faint in places.

Time to adjust

We build in rest days at Ghunsa, Lhonak, Olangchung Gola and Thudam. The trip is not for first-time trekkers. You should be fit and have trekked at altitude before.

The route and camp spots can change with weather, snow and trail conditions. Your guide makes the final call each day.

Permits

  • Kanchenjunga restricted area permit
  • Kanchenjunga Conservation Area entry permit
  • Restricted area permit for Olangchung Gola and upper Tamor (to be confirmed)
  • Makalu Barun National Park entry permit
  • TIMS card if still required

Frequently Asked Questions

It is very strenuous. Days are long, there are two high passes, and there are several days far from any village. You need good fitness and some past trekking at altitude.

You need a restricted area permit for the Kanchenjunga region and a Kanchenjunga Conservation Area entry permit. The Olangchung Gola and upper Tamor section may need a further restricted area permit. Makalu Barun National Park also needs an entry permit. We arrange the paperwork. The exact permit list is confirmed before you travel.

No. Restricted areas need at least two trekkers and a licensed guide. We run this trip for groups of 2 to 12.

Mostly camping. In some villages like Ghunsa and Olangchung Gola we may use simple lodges. Our crew carries tents, a kitchen and food for the remote days.

April to May and October to November. Snow on the passes can be a problem early in spring and late in autumn. Monsoon and winter are not suitable.

We add rest days at Ghunsa, Lhonak, Olangchung Gola and Thudam, and we return to lower camps to sleep after Pangpema. Your guide watches everyone each day. If you are unwell, we go down.

Very little. Expect no signal for long parts of the trip, mainly in the remote middle section. Ask us what communication your guide will carry on your dates. Tell your family before you go.

We keep a few spare days in the plan where we can. If a pass cannot be crossed, we choose a safer option with you, which may mean changing the route. We cannot promise the full route in every season.
