Trip Overview

Nepal's two most iconic cities, one unforgettable journey. This 6-day Kathmandu and Pokhara tour takes you through the finest of what Nepal has to offer β€” ancient temples and royal squares in the Kathmandu Valley, then the serene lakes and soaring Himalayan peaks of Pokhara. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning traveller, this itinerary delivers the perfect blend of culture, nature and adventure.

Your journey begins in Kathmandu, Nepal's vibrant capital and a living museum of art and spirituality. Walk the cobblestoned lanes of Patan Durbar Square, feel the electric energy of Boudhanath Stupa β€” one of the largest stupas in the world β€” and witness the ancient cremation rituals at Pashupatinath, one of the holiest Hindu temples in Asia. Every street corner in Kathmandu tells a story thousands of years in the making.

From Kathmandu, a scenic tourist bus ride through Nepal's lush mid-hills brings you to Pokhara β€” the adventure capital of Nepal and the gateway to the Annapurna Himalaya. Rise before dawn for the legendary sunrise at Sarangkot, where the entire Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges ignite in gold and crimson. Spend the morning drifting across the mirror-still waters of Phewa Lake by rowboat, the snow-capped peaks perfectly reflected around you. Explore the mystical Gupteshwor Cave, the thundering Devi's Falls, the hilltop serenity of the World Peace Pagoda, and the fascinating International Mountain Museum β€” all in a single, memorable day.

In the evenings, Pokhara's famous Lakeside district comes alive with colour β€” rooftop restaurants, live music, vibrant bars and the warm hospitality of the Nepali people make every night as memorable as every day. For the adventurous, Pokhara also offers optional activities including paragliding over the valley, zip-lining, bungee jumping and ultra-light mountain flights.

This tour is operated by Himalayan Social Journey (HSJ), a Kathmandu-based travel company with over a decade of experience crafting authentic Nepal experiences. All guides are government-certified, English-speaking and deeply knowledgeable about Nepal's culture and history. With comfortable hotels, private airport transfers and attentive service, this tour is the ideal introduction to Nepal.

Day 2

6–7 hours

After breakfast at your hotel, board your comfortable tourist bus for the overland journey to Pokhara (approximately 6–7 hours). The route follows the scenic Prithvi Highway, winding through Nepal's mid-hills along the banks of the Trishuli River, past deep gorges, dense forest and terraced rice paddies clinging to the hillsides. Small roadside towns, chai stops and occasional glimpses of the Ganesh Himal make the journey itself an experience. Watch for your first sightings of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges emerging above the clouds as you near Pokhara. Upon arrival, check into your lakeside hotel and spend the afternoon exploring the famous Lakeside district at your own pace β€” browse local handicrafts, sip coffee by the lake and watch the sun dip behind the Himalayas.

Day 3

4–5 hours sightseeing

Set your alarm early β€” today you will witness one of Nepal's most spectacular sights. Rise before dawn for the drive up to Sarangkot Hill (1,590 m), where you'll watch the first light of sunrise paint the Annapurna Range β€” including Annapurna I (8,091 m), Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Dhaulagiri β€” in brilliant shades of gold and crimson. It's a moment that stays with you forever.

After returning for breakfast, spend the day exploring Pokhara's top sights with your guide: glide across the glassy waters of Phewa Lake by rowboat with the Himalayas reflected all around you; climb to the hilltop World Peace Pagoda for a panoramic view of the entire valley and lake; descend into the mystical Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave with its ancient limestone formations; marvel at the powerful Devi's Falls (Patale Chhango), which disappears dramatically into an underground gorge; and visit the International Mountain Museum, which chronicles the history of Himalayan mountaineering and Nepal's mountain cultures. In the evening, explore Lakeside's restaurants and vibrant night scene at your leisure.

6–7 hours

After breakfast, board the tourist bus for the return journey to Kathmandu (6–7 hours). The route back offers a fresh perspective on Nepal's varied landscape β€” lush river gorges, hilltop villages and the gradual transition from the open Pokhara basin to the busy Kathmandu Valley. Use the journey to rest and relive the highlights of Pokhara. Upon arrival, check back into your hotel and spend the evening exploring Thamel's famous streets β€” great for souvenir shopping, trying Nepali cuisine and people-watching.

Day 5

4–5 hours

Today is dedicated to exploring the extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Kathmandu Valley with your knowledgeable English-speaking guide.

Begin at Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most sacred Hindu temples in Asia, set on the banks of the holy Bagmati River β€” an awe-inspiring window into Nepal's deep spiritual traditions. Continue to the magnificent Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world, where you'll walk the sacred circumambulation path among monks, pilgrims and spinning prayer wheels. Next, climb to Swoyambhunath (the Monkey Temple) on its hilltop above the Kathmandu Valley, with panoramic views over the city and the watchful eyes of the Buddha painted on every face of its golden spire. End the day at Patan Durbar Square, a remarkable plaza of Newari architecture β€” intricately wood-carved temples, royal courtyards and centuries-old sculptures that remain beautifully intact. In the evening, enjoy a final night out in Kathmandu β€” perhaps a rooftop dinner with views over the twinkling city lights.
