Day-by-Day Itinerary
We will depart from Kathmandu and travel to Lhasa, arriving either at Gonggar Airport or the Train Station. After landing, we will drive for about an hour to reach the city, where we will check in to our hotel. The day will be spent resting and allowing our bodies to acclimatize to the high altitude of Lhasa (3650m). It's important to take it easy to adjust to the thinner air. The rest of the day is free to relax and explore the surroundings at a leisurely pace. We will overnight in a hotel in Lhasa.
we will spend two full days exploring the highlights of Lhasa. Today, we will visit the iconic Potala Palace, the former residence of the Dalai Lama and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Afterward, we will head to the Jokhang Temple, an important pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists, followed by a stroll through the bustling Barkhor Bazaar, where you can experience the vibrant local culture and shop for souvenirs. These visits will give us a deeper understanding of Lhasa's rich history, spirituality, and heritage. The rest of the day will be at leisure to explore further or relax.
We will continue our exploration of Lhasa by visiting two significant Tibetan Buddhist monasteries: Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery. Drepung, once one of the largest monasteries in Tibet, offers a fascinating glimpse into Tibetan monastic life and is known for its beautiful architecture. Sera Monastery, famous for its lively debates among monks, is another key cultural and spiritual site. These visits will enrich our understanding of Tibetan Buddhism and its deep roots in the region. Both days are filled with a combination of historical, spiritual, and cultural experiences, offering a well-rounded view of Lhasa’s heritage. After these immersive excursions, we will return to our hotel for an overnight stay.
Today, we will depart from Lhasa and embark on a scenic drive towards Shigatse, passing through Gyantse. The journey covers a distance of 260 kilometers and will take us across two high passes: Kora La (5,010m) and Kamba La (4,794m), offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. Along the way, we will stop at the stunning Yamdrok Lake, known for its turquoise waters set against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks. We will also explore Gyantse, home to the historic Pholkor and Kumbum Monastery, which are significant landmarks of Tibetan culture. In the afternoon, we will continue our drive for approximately 1.5 hours to reach Shigatse, a major city in Tibet. After a day full of stunning sights and cultural exploration, we will check into our hotel in Shigatse for an overnight stay.
we will begin the day with a visit to the Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse, the seat of the Panchen Lama and one of the most important monasteries in Tibet. Afterward, we will embark on a scenic drive towards Rongbuk, covering a distance of 334 kilometers. Along the way, we will cross the Gyatchula Pass (5,200m), offering incredible views of the surrounding Tibetan landscape. As we approach Rongbuk, we will be greeted by the sight of the Rongbuk Monastery, which holds the distinction of being the highest monastery in the world. This is a truly unique and awe-inspiring location, with panoramic views of the Himalayas. After a day filled with scenic beauty and cultural significance, we will stay overnight in a guesthouse near Rongbuk.
